kitchen renovation

drab to fab

The homeowners wanted a refresh; their current kitchen was dated, and the materials were of poor quality. The homeowner had attended a masterclass we hosted where we explained our design build process specifically for remodeling a kitchen. They were stuck and didn’t know where to begin with remodeling their kitchen. The class was the first step they needed to get started.  We met to review their project and eventually the project scope expanded to include the baths, laundry room and mudroom.

design process

mood board

We knew the clients were open to pops of color. However,we always like to design starting with a timeless color scheme for the major components and then add in fun punches of color and patterns along the way. We decided to present a classic black, white, and gold scheme to them, and they really liked it. We decided that berry pink barstools and a bench cushion with a vibrant pattern would give the space the bold touch the clients had envisioned.

the dilemma

STUCK BETWEEN A WALL AND A HARD PLACE

They loved their house; it just wasn’t working for them. Their kitchen was very narrow, not wide enough for an island, and there was an adjacent, poorly designed walk-in pantry that would give us additional square footage for the kitchen footprint.

BEFORE
Before Image of a Wall that was Cutting off the space in a kitchen remodel

This is the “problem wall” that made the kitchen too narrow for seating at the island

AFTER
Kitchen remodel where pushing back a wall opened up the space

Pushing the wall back solved the problem and gave us the width needed for an island with seating for this family of five.

the dilemma

EFFICIENCY IS KEY

One of the most important things in a kitchen layout is efficiency. Renovating can be a great opportunity to incorporate inefficient spaces into a new kitchen design.

BEFORE
Before of a kitchen remodel with tight space

The kitchen was short length-wise, with an inefficient pantry tucked behind the hood wall.

AFTER
Drab to Fab Kitchen Renovation from Marlene & Co

Eliminating the pantry allowed for enough room for two islands; one for seating, and one for prepping. The additional length also allowed for the fridge to be closer to the main workspace, creating the ideal work triangle.

fun addition

get brewing

Our client really loves to drink coffee, so they were hoping to have a dedicated area to bring more joy to this daily ritual.

BEFORE
Kitchen remodel before image with little usable wall space

By removing the window behind the computer area, we were able to create a dedicated coffee station.

AFTER
Kitchen remodel where a window was removed for a custom coffee bar by Marlene & Co

The clients chose a beautiful mosaic backsplash that included some gold as well, as a nod to the gold finishes used in the kitchen.
