Why the Best Designs Start With How You Actually Live
Every renovation starts with inspiration. A tile you fell in love with. A kitchen you saw online. A color palette that just feels like “you.” But before any of that gets chosen, I ask a different set of questions. I am all about function first.
Who’s going to be in this space every day? How many people, what ages, what hobbies? Are you planning to stay in this home for thirty years, or thinking about resale in ten? These aren’t just planning questions. They’re the foundation the entire design is built on.
Function Is the Story of the Space
A young family with three kids under ten has different needs than a couple planning to age in place. A homeowner who loves to cook and entertain needs a kitchen that works differently than someone who grabs coffee and heads out the door.
That’s why, before we ever talk, we talk about people. How they move through their day. Where the pain points are. What’s missing, and what they wish their space could do instead.
Once I understand that, we can shift toward a strategic design built for the way you live.
Getting to Know You Is Part of the Process
This is why I spend so much time getting to know my clients before we ever open a single sample book. It’s not small talk. It’s research.
I want to know how you cook, how you host, how you unwind. If your kids are toddlers or teenagers, if you’re planning to retire in this home, accessibility should be part of the plan now. Every answer shapes a decision, whether it’s counter height or a mudroom layout.
Beautiful and Functional Aren’t Opposites
One of the biggest myths in renovation is that you have to choose between form and function. Sometimes the most functional solution is also the boldest design move you can make.
Take my recent project at Eleganza. This family of seven loved to host, but their kitchen and dining room were separated by a wall that cut off the flow between the two spaces. The heart of the home was split in two.
The fix was taking that wall down. Opening the space meant conversation could move freely between the cook and the crowd, and hosting a family gathering no longer meant someone was stuck alone behind a wall.
That’s the kind of change that comes from asking the right questions first. When function comes first, beauty follows naturally, because the design is rooted in something real.
